Overview

The ruins of the city of Gede are located 7 km from the city of Watamu and is the most important archaeological site on the coast. The word “Gede” derives from the dialect Oromo and means “precious”. Declared a national monument in 1927 and a national park in 1948, this place is surrounded by baobab vegetation. The ruins concern the ancient merchant city of Gedi, dating back between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. Particularly noteworthy are the three mosques and the house of the sultan. The objects found in the houses are kept in the museum inaugurated in 2000 and can be visited at the end of the tour. In addition, at the entrance we will be greeted by many nice little monkeys accustomed to the presence and interaction with humans, who really like bananas brought by tourists!
