Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara is the most famous wildlife conservation area in Kenya and indeed the world. This game reserve is home to a rich variety of wildlife in a natural and untouched state.

Maasai Mara has a rolling savannah landscape dotted with shrubs and bush thickets, and is the Kenyan part of the large ecosystem stretching south to Serengeti in Tanzania.

The wildlife in Maasai Mara is varied, ranging from the big cats to elephant, rhino and vast herds of herbivores such as wildebeest. A true animal kingdom !

Vegetation: Open savannah and light patches of bush, woodland. River forests along the Mara river.

Maasai Mara Safari

There are several safari options by road to the Maasai Mara. These mostly start from Nairobi, and include a scenic 5 – 6 hour drive into the Great Rift Valley and to the main Sekenani entry point of the Mara.

Accommodation is in lodges or tented camps which offer quality service, rooms, and meals on a full board basis. Safaris are usually for a minimum of 2 nights / 3 days, although it is possible to have a quick one night safari here as well, though this is considered too short for a proper travel experience. Flying Safaris to Mara are also available.

Ngorongoro Crater

At 2286 metres above sea level, Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact caldera in the world. With a crater floor about 16-20 kms across, and an area of 259 sq kilometers, with steep surrounding walls, Ngorongoro is a scenic, natural enclosure for thousands of wild animals and hundreds of bird species.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the last remaining areas in Tanzania where one can see the endangered Black Rhino: a small population is thriving in this idyllic and protected environment, and it remains one of the few areas where they continue to breed in the wild.
Information on Ngorongoro
Ngorongoro Conservation area encompasses the crater and the surrounding area, forming a wildlife sanctuary. The crater itself is the remains of a once massive volcano, nearly three million years old, on the eastern border of the Serengeti National Park. Now collapsed and eroded, its volcanic origins make it a fertile ‘bowl’ in the midst of rolling highlands, with permanent water sources and steep sides ensuring that the wildlife that thrives here has little reason to leave.

It is the stalking ground of around 20,000 – 30,000 wild animals at any one time, the most densely packed concentration of wildlife in Africa, and remains one of the most perfectly formed and certainly the most spectacular calderas on the planet.

The Crater comprises areas of grassland, swamps, lerai forest (small patches of forest made up of yellow-barked acacia and yellow fever trees), and Lake Makat, a central soda lake filled by the Munge river.

Excursion To The Island Of Love

It starts from your village around 09:30 (depending on where you are staying, if necessary, a tuktuk will pick you up) and you can walk to the Island of love. We will walk on the atolls of fine white sand, where you will admire the coral reef and the immensity of the Indian ocean that opens in front of you. Relax, sun and sea. There is nothing better to chase away stress, tiredness and regenerate. Towards lunchtime the tide will have covered most of the atolls leaving only the main island with its famous heart shape uncovered, therefore it will be a typical baobab wood canoe with sail to bring us back to shore.

Nairobi Giraffe Centre Visit

Although it tends to be promoted as a children’s outing, the Giraffe Centre has serious aims. Run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), it has successfully boosted the population of the rare Rothschild’s giraffe from an original nucleus of animals that came from a wild herd near Soy in western Kenya. The center’s other main mission is to educate children about conservation.

The Giraffe Centre is the public side of Giraffe Manor, so if you are staying at the latter, you will have an even closer engagement with the giraffes from your table in the breakfast room or even through your bedroom window. If you’re not able to stay at Giraffe Manor, the AFEW Giraffe Centre is a rewarding alternative. You’ll get some great mug shots from the giraffe-level observation tower (note the viewing platform faces west, so be prepared for the lighting), where the elegant, slow-motion giraffes push their huge heads through to be fed the pellets you’re given to offer them. There are various other animals around, including a number of tame warthogs, and a wooded 95-acre (40-hectare) nature sanctuary across the road, which is a good area for birdwatching.

You can visit the AFEW Giraffe Centre from any of our hotels in the Nairobi area on any day of the year – no pre-booking is required. If you’re staying at Giraffe Manor, your visit to the platform is included free of charge. And if you’re staying at The Emakoko, a visit can easily be incorporated into the activities that are included in your stay (the actual entrance fee is not included, and paid on arrival) – just let us know you would like to go. If you’re staying at another hotel, we will book a driver-guide and private vehicle for you, and you can incorporate other Nairobi visits into the same half- or full-day private vehicle use. The driver will pick you up and drop you back when you choose.

Northern White Rhinos Visit

All the camps and lodges in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy will take you to visit the northern white rhinos in their predator-free Endangered Species Enclosure. This is a well fenced and carefully guarded 700-acre (3km²) patch of savannah and woodland in the eastern part of the main conservancy.

The two northern white rhinos here, Najin and her daughter Fatu (the last two individuals of their subspecies left in the world) were moved to Kenya from Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic in 2009, with Mark Cawardine and Stephen Fry filming the whole event for the BBC. You’ll meet the northern white rhinos and the keepers who walk with them at all times, and you may have a chance to get out of the vehicle, feed them carrots and take some selfies. Depending on circumstances, however, you may need to stay in the vehicle: your driver-guide and the enclosure keepers will let you know. Either way, it’s a gentle and moving encounter: the sheer mass of these magnificent animals is impressive and memorable.

If you opt for the horseback visit, you will need to demonstrate a reasonable level of equestrian skills, and horseback visits take place at different times form the usual visits by vehicle.

The northern subspecies of the white rhino once ranged across Uganda, the northeast Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Central African Republic and what is now South Sudan. Their last wild population, in Garamba National Park in the DRC, was wiped out by poachers in the early 2000s. After the last male, Sudan, died of age-related complications in 2018, the only chance of preserving the genetic identity of this subspecies is in-vitro fertilisation using frozen sperm and possibly surrogate southern white females. These are expensive, experimental techniques, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Dvůr Králové Zoo are running a joint campaign to raise $US9million to Make a Rhino.

The enclosure also protects small herds of Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest, both of which are easy to see.

Start and end location: Any of the camps and lodges in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Timing and duration of a vehicle visit: 08:30 and 16:00 for the standard visit of about 1 hour, usually as part of a morning or afternoon game drive

Timing and duration of a visit on horseback: 10:00 and 15:00 for the horseback visit, also of about 1 hour, usually after your morning drive or before your afternoon drive

Maximum size of group: Visits are usually limited to 12 guests in total, so booking in advance is recommended

Age restrictions: None, but children need to be under control at all times

Availability: You can request to book a visit in advance when booking your safari with Expert Africa, or include a visit in your activities for the next day or later in your stay when discussing your plans with your camp or lodge manager.
